FAQs

What is The Imlay Foundation?

The Imlay Foundation is a private foundation formed by John P. Imlay Jr. in 1990 to support charitable organizations within Atlanta and Scotland. It is the product of a deep family commitment to helping our communities thrive economically, ecologically, educationally and culturally.

Who may apply for grants from the Foundation?

The Imlay Foundation currently funds organizations largely in Metro Atlanta, Georgia that are classified as tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and as public charities under section 509(a) of that code.

How do I request a grant?

Please see the Grant Requirement Page for detailed information on requesting a grant.

Are there deadlines for applications?

Yes; our Board meets three times per year to review submissions.

Meeting Date LOIs received no later than Applications received by
April Dec 15 Feb 1
September Apr 15 Jun 1
December Aug 15 Oct 1

Do you accept unsolicited grant applications?

You must write a Letter of Intent (LOI) before being invited to submit a grant application. See Grant Requirements for detailed information.

When does the Foundation notify organizations of funding?

We notify the organizations within a week following our board meetings. Meetings typically are held in April, September and December.

Are there minimums or maximums on the amount of grants?

No, we look at all requests in proportion to programs, an organization’s budget and needs. First time grants are generally in the $10,000 – $15,000 range.

Do you provide annual grants?

Ordinarily, we do not make a grant to the same organization in consecutive years. If a grant is not awarded, organizations may apply again in 12 months. Typically, we do not fund multi-year or consecutive year grants.

Do you provide general operating grants?

Yes. We understand the challenges of operating a working non-profit. Similar to start up money for entrepreneurs, the Foundation seeks to support our partners’ work as well as their results.

My organization is outside of Metro Atlanta. Can I still apply for funding?

The Imlay Foundation is dedicated to our Metro Atlanta communities and prefers to fund the programs and organizations operating there.

How does the Foundation view administrative overhead costs?

The Foundation looks closely at overhead costs to ensure cost effective management of funds. There is no maximum requirement because there are several organizations whose sole purpose is to administer worthwhile programs, so we scrutinize the budget to understand an organization’s spending in respect to the programs it supports.
